The concept of exorcists can be rather broad between mediums. The basic understanding is that these people get rid of spirits whether they are possessing someone or are present in nature. Exorcists can fight ghosts, demons, mythical creatures, and so on.
As far as video games go, there are not a lot of what typical fans may call exorcists. There are plenty that fights off evil spirits though and these upcoming characters fit the definition within a reasonable area. Don’t worry about spoilers, only the briefest explanations will be needed to discuss how cool these exorcists and their associated games are. One character that deserves a quick mention is Pac-Man as he technically fights ghosts too. It’s a fun answer but not quite what the rest of these picks are about.
6 Dr. Peter Venkman
Dr. Peter Venkman might not be the typical exorcist/ghost hunter fans of the genre think about when it comes to games. He is playable in some of the earlier movie tie-in Ghostbusters games. Most of them are not good though. The only one worth recommending is Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
At the time, it was considered to be the true sequel to Ghostbusters 2 everyone had been waiting for. The original cast, minus Sigourney Weaver, returned to voice their characters. Bill Murray was just as dry as ever in his role as Dr. Peter Venkman, but players did not control him. They instead played an unnamed rookie who was joined by the original crew on missions. Playable or not, Dr. Peter Venkman is a professional.
5 Luigi
Luigi might not also be a typical pick. His first side adventure was Luigi’s Mansion, not counting Mario is Missing which is a game most have forgotten about. Luigi’s Mansion was like a mix of Mario and Resident Evil as it took place in a mansion with an expanding area, and it’s also a lot like the Ghostbusters films. Luigi brought so much character into this game. It was an amazing 180 because at that point Luigi was about as milquetoast as Mario.
Luigi may be afraid of ghosts and cower before them, however, when push comes to shove, his heart is in the right place. Regardless of how terrified he feels, Luigi would bag and tag ten million more ghosts to rescue his brother. He’s done it three times now. Would Mario do the same for Luigi?
4 Yoh Asakura
Yoh Asakura is from the Shaman King anime. That anime is about a group of exorcists that can communicate with the dead and infuse their powers into weapons. The overall story follows Yoh and his companions as they compete to become the best. Yoh comes from a traditional family of spirit guides.
He doesn’t want to become the king of the world like everyone else at first. It’s more like something his bride-to-be wants for Yoh. Now, there have been a lot of Shaman King games and most are not great. That said, Shaman King: Master of Spirits is worth mentioning because it is all about Yoh’s solo adventures to thwart ghosts and demons. The game is a lot like the Castlevania series, which is to say this is Metroidvania-like in style. Fans of the genre should check it out. There are two of them as well.
3 Miku Hinasaki
Miku Hinasaki is from the Fatal Frame series. The first game is about Miku trying to find her sister, Mafuyu, who she suspects has been taken by ghosts. This is one of the spookiest and most challenging survival horror games around. That’s because it is one of the more realistic takes on the genre.
Whether ghosts are real is arguable, but Fatal Frame is still very realistic in its depictions of ghosts and the landscapes of Japan. All Miku has is a camera. She’s not firing a Proton Pack or some kind of gun at these spirits. She takes pictures to trap them. She’s also a teenager, inexperienced from all of this chaos. The game may be older now but it is still worth looking for.
2 Akito
Akito is one of the characters that inspired the creation of this article as he is the protagonist of Ghostwire: Tokyo. Along with being the most recent release of all the titles included in this list, the game is also the most modern in terms of timelines. The story follows Akito on his way home when his district of Shibuya, within Tokyo, is put under a dome. Most of the citizens are spirited away, but Akito is able to fight them off because another spirit known only as KK possesses him.
It’s eventually revealed that KK used to be human. He was a cop with spiritual powers. Now that Akito has them, it is up to him to kick these ghosts and demons out of Shibuya. His powers are traditional for a monk or at least one found in anime. He can channel elemental powers like bringing up gusts of wind. He can save human spirits with a paper doll. He has talismans that can stun demons. The list goes on. He is a force to be reckoned with.
1 Trevor Belmont
The Belmont family has to be the most iconic family in video games next to the Mario brothers. Their bloodline was cursed to fight Dracula and his minions for all eternity. There are a lot of great characters that could be highlighted within this series, but Trevor sticks out the most.
That’s because he got his own four season anime series. The game on which it is primarily based, Castlevania 3: Dracula’s Curse, also has Trevor teaming up with other fighters of evil. Sypha, for example, is a priestess with magical powers to stop demons in their tracks. Alucard is another example. Whether Trevor and his team are exorcising evil with spells, swords, or whips, they accomplish their mission with flying colors.
