Spider-Man: No Way Home’s success isn’t a big surprise, but to Doctor Strange’s Benedict Cumberbatch, it originally was. The Marvel actor has now shared that he was skeptical about how big the third MCU Spidey film would truly become.
Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home picks up immediately where Spider-Man: Far From Home left off, as Peter Parker seeks Doctor Strange’s help in restoring his secret identity after the world finds out who Spider-Man really is from Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal). After a botched magic spell, Parker must then deal with multiversal consequences and stop visitors from other universes from wreaking havoc on his world.
Other than the return of many villains such as Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro from previous Spider-Man installments, both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men make their surprising yet welcomed appearance in No Way Home. With the film including so many fan-favorite characters, No Way Home was bound to be this monumental success, but Cumberbatch revealed to Empire that he was still caught off guard by it all.
“I think when Kevin Feige first said, ‘We’ll know about the future of cinema, or the cinemagoing experience, after this film,’ I was like, ‘Okay, everyone’s drinking too much of the Kool-Aid around here,’” Cumberbatch admitted. “My ignorance was showed up." While still trying to soak up of the film’s accomplishments, Cumberbatch is now gearing up to reprise his sorcerer role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a film that is shaping up to be just as big, if not bigger than No Way Home.
After rumored cameos and a second trailer that reveals the bonkersness that awaits, the long awaited sequel, like its title suggests, will explore more of the growing multiverse that has been set up this past year in series like WandaVision and Loki and now in films like No Way Home. Directed by Sam Raimi (who helmed the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy) this time around, the film looks to take the MCU in a darker direction, as star Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch) shared that the upcoming feature resembles a horror film at times.
It’s unclear when Strange and Spidey will cross paths again on screen, especially considering the doubts about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man returning after what seemed like a conclusion to his character’s story with No Way Home. However, with Sony producer Amy Pascal planning for Holland to star in at least three more Spider-Man films, as well as the infinite possibilities of the multiverse being laid out, the two heroes will no doubt reunite at some point soon.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
