Crystar is an action-based role-playing game (RPG for short) about a girl named Rei Hatada, who wants nothing more than to revive her dead sister, Mirai. After making a deal with the twin demons that rule over Purgatory, Rei must now fight any malicious souls in Purgatory.

Many players who are new to the game may want to jump straight in without knowing anything about game play. As Crystar is a story-based game more than action based, it is a reasonable thought. However, there are still bosses to fight and enemies to take down, and so these players may end up stuck without the proper guidance.

7 Remember there are Multiple Choice Questions

As Crystar is a story-based game more than anything else, there will be times when a player has to choose between two options within the game’s dialogue. Although it does not change which ending the player achieves (that is within the game play), it does add for some flavor text.

Though the flavor text does not change any endings, it can provide the player with some additional lore about the world around them to discover. A player could (and should) go through these questions and answer as they see fit.

6 Unlock the Guardian

Essentially, the Guardian is a huge source of extra damage within Crystar, and can be summoned once the Tear gauge is filled up. When the gauge is filled, the player will basically enter a berserk mode, in which damage is greatly boosted and the player will take far less damage.

Of course, this Guardian is only available for as long as the player has Tears in their gauge. When the gauge runs empty, they will revert to normal. It’s a great idea to ensure that the Guardian can come out as soon as possible, as it is incredibly useful against tough enemies and bosses.

5 Increase Chains as Much as Possible

Chains in Crystar are essentially a combo indicator. However, these combos will also have a benefit for the player. With that in mind, it’s a good idea to try and extend the Chain amount for as long as possible.

The longer a chain becomes, the more Tears a player will gather. With more Tears, players will require less time to summon their Guardian. There is no downside to making chains as long as possible, so a player should try and make sure that they strike their enemies for as long as they can, to ensure the Chain goes on.

4 Rei’s Room is Used for Preparations

Before a player goes out on a mission, they will find themselves in Rei’s room. This room is used to prepare the player for battle, as it can be used for a variety of things, including organizing items, preparing for battle, and finding missions to take on.

The player should spend some time to go through what they have, along with fully looking through all of their Ordeals, in order to take on missions that are the most beneficial at that time. It will benefit them to fully prepare beforehand, and they can do exactly that in Rei’s room.

3 Set Healing Items to Auto

Healing is a very important aspect of Crystar. Luckily, a player can set their healing to automatic mode, in order to make it easier on them. A player can manually heal by pausing quickly enough to use healing items, but it’s just far easier to set these healing items to automatically go.

Once set to auto, a player that possesses a certain supply of healing goods will be automatically healed by them once they drop below a certain amount of HP. This makes it far easier to get through particularly harder bosses.

2 The Map is Useful

There is a map in the upper right hand corner of the screen when a player is taking on a mission in Crystar. This map will alert the player to their general direction, along with what area is up next, and so on.

It’s a good idea to check this map every now and again, as it is easy to get lost around the Ordeal’s map. Checking the map will alert the player to their surroundings, along with ensuring that they are always going in the right direction in order to fulfill their mission and its necessities.

1 Memoirs are Story-Based Content

After a player defeats enemies, they will be “rewarded” with Torments. These Torments act as debuffs for the rest of the mission, but can be purified after the mission is complete and the player is back in their room.

After they are purified, these Torments will become Memoirs. As Crystar is focused heavily on the story, these Memoirs are good, due to the fact that they provide lore for the world around the player. Though there is no benefit to collecting Memoirs gameplay-wise, they offer snippets of lore that properly build the world of Crystar and help the story to unfold.

Crystar is available on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows.
