Although organisations such as Marvel Studios and Warner Bros. are aiming to build a name for themselves in 2022, the year is chock-full of highly anticipated blockbusters from throughout the industry. In that mix is James Cameron’s Avatar 2, a film that has been in the works for nearly a generation. This exotic sci-fi epic has had more delays than any other blockbuster film, but it’s finally on the horizon.
The original Avatar film became the highest-grossing film in history at the box office in 2010, owing to its one-of-a-kind visual effects. Its main rival was the MCU’s Avengers: Endgame, which came out on top for a short period before Avatar was re-released in theatres and reclaimed the box office title.
Although Cameron has hinted at up to four sequels to the tale, Avatar has been in theatres for more than a decade. Because of the lengthy delay, Avatar 2 has fallen off the radar for many moviegoers, despite the fact that filming on Avatar 3 and Avatar 4 is allegedly progressing.
Fans may now have an idea of when to get the first look at their return to Pandora, thanks to new interesting development.
According to The Ankler’s Jeff Sneider, Disney plans to unveil the first trailer for James Cameron’s Avatar 2 ahead of the May 6, 2022 theatrical premiere of Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Disney allegedly thinks that this trailer tactic will be a win-win for two of their greatest movies in 2022, kicking off global promotion for a 13-year-old cinematic wonder while simultaneously garnering a few extra dollars for Doctor Strange 2 from Pandora franchise enthusiasts.
Marvel is assisting with the epic return to Pandora.
Doctor Strange 2 is hoping to be in the running for the biggest movie of the year as a result of the Multiverse fracturing and dozens of potential cameos. Now that Disney owns the Avatar franchise, it seems like a reasonable move to promote another film, Avatar 2, that may be just as successful.
At the all-time box office, Avatar is around $50 million ahead of Avengers: Endgame, with the majority of that revenue coming more than a decade ago. After Marvel Studios and Sony collaborated to generate another almost $2 billion success in Spider-Man: No Way Home, which is set to be released in 2021, the opportunity to advertise another picture with that lucrative potential is too good to pass up.
While fans await the highly anticipated first trailer for July’s Thor: Love and Thunder, May appears to be a little early than expected for an Avatar 2 trailer, given that the picture will be released seven months later. However, thanks to 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok and two subsequent Avengers films, viewers have seen plenty of Thor recently, and Disney wants to give Avatar 2 as much attention as possible.
This timing will also give Disney a little advantage over Warner Bros., which has Shazam!: Fury of the Gods planned to debut on the same day as the Avatar sequel.
Avatar 2 is scheduled to hit theatres on December 16, 2022. The first trailer is expected to be released alongside Doctor Strange 2, which will be released on May 6, 2022.
