Attack on Titan is a show that has seen many twists and turns over the course of its lengthy and excellent run, with fans finding the wait for Part 3 of the Final Season to be unbearable. The anime is truly in a class of its own, with many fans labeling it as one of the greatest shows ever made. It’s high praise, and something that Attack on Titan deserves.
With the sheer number of deaths in the series, most people would assume that certain characters would bite the dust sooner rather than later due to a poor first impression. However, the following characters have surprisingly managed to stay alive till now, even though they could’ve easily become a casualty multiple times throughout the series.
10 Jean Kirstein
Jean Kirstein is one of the best characters in the show, which is surprising given how unlikable he seemed at first. His constant prattling about the Military Police was annoying enough as is without his fabricated rivalry against Eren.
However, after his first experience with the Titans, Jean’s character underwent a massive change. The death of his close friend and the struggles he went through made it clear that he needed to make a real change by being a part of the Survey Corps.
9 Connie Springer
Connie Springer is another character who seemed destined for the chopping block from the get-go. He isn’t really known for his smarts, which would typically spell death for a person who has to deal with the threat of Titans.
However, his friends managed to save him time and again, while he slowly came into his own and realized just how fast he could be with ODM gear. He’s a great part of the show, even though his behavior can be rather questionable at times.
8 Rico Brzenska
Characters who appear only for one arc yet remain alive will definitely earn a spot on this list. After all, unless their fate is shown explicitly, then these people have managed to survive even though they weren’t useful to the plot at all.
Rico Brzenska is one such character who seemed interesting at first glance, but a lack of screen time rendered her completely unimportant. In fact, it’s possible she could meet her end at this point and no one would even care!
7 Kitz Woermann
Kitz Woermann made a horrible first impression when he started interrogating the three cadets who apparently had the powers of a Titan. He looked like someone who couldn’t handle a situation without succumbing to the pressure, and his complacency could’ve cost the future of humanity their lives.
Thankfully, Commander Pyxis came to save the day and brought them in to test their capabilities instead. The fact that this amazing character lost his life while Kitz Woermann is presumably still alive is a fact that doesn’t go down well for many fans.
6 Gabi Braun
Gabi started as a character whom everyone hated for her actions. Her senseless killing of Sasha put her in the crosshairs of many fans who wanted her dead and done away with.
However, Gabi’s character soon took a turn for the best and made everyone realize that anyone could react similarly if they were put in her position. She’s a brilliantly-written character who makes the post-timeskip period more interesting to watch.
5 Kiyomi Azumabito
The sole representative of the Hizuru seemed like a character who didn’t really have an interesting role to play in the plot. She seemed like the perfect candidate for a death that would shake up political boundaries or have somewhat of an impact on Mikasa.
Instead, she’s turned into a pretty run-of-the-mill side character who plays a convenient role in the plot as and when required. Much more important characters have died throughout Attack on Titan, so it’s not unreasonable to assume that she might still meet her end by the conclusion of the series.
4 Nicolo
Nicolo’s bigoted hate against the Eldians slowly faded away after falling in love with Sasha. Her death broke him and caused him to go down a dark path, although it did show just how brilliantly this character was written.
That being said, his role wasn’t all that important in the second part, so most people assumed his death was on the cards. However, this isn’t the case, and Nicolo is still alive…for now.
3 Yelena
Yelena is another great character introduced after the timeskip who is pretty captivating in her own right. The grotesque face she makes as a reaction to Armin’s deception is truly iconic and one of the most memorable moments in the entire series.
That being said, her character seemed like the perfect candidate for a casualty when Eren and Zeke were fighting against Marley. Somehow, she survived, and Part 3 will reveal this character’s fate by the end of the series.
2 Onyankopon
Onyankopon is another interesting character who joins Paradis Island in a battle against Marley. While he seems like a halfway-decent character, his motivations are left in doubt after he decided to back Yelena and the Yeagerists.
He didn’t seem like a really important character… that is until Eren decided to activate the Rumbling. It was pretty shocking, and Onyankopon’s statement about his homeland being eradicated made this threat all the more real.
1 Hitch Dreyse
Hitch and Marlo could’ve been a pretty decent couple in Attack on Titan. However, fate had different plans, and Marlo was, unfortunately, a victim of a suicide charge that decimated almost the entirety of the Survey Corps.
This was a horrible piece of news for Hitch, who realized she had feelings for Marlo. She could’ve easily lost her life during the Marleyan counterattack, but she’s apparently alive…somehow.
