As one of the most beloved figures in the Assasin’s Creed franchise, players remember Ezio Auditore da Firenze as a master assassin who overcame the odds. He is also remembered as a figure who compiled the majority of the Assasin’s codex written by Altaïr Ibn-La’Ahad, as a liberator against ‘tyrannic’ Templar rule, and as a staunch supporter and proponent of free will and independence throughout Italy. Ezio was also able to avenge the deaths of his family, putting an end to the rule of the Borgias as well as ensuring Columbus’ expeditions to the New World. Ezio would later uncover the mysteries of the Assasin Order upon finding the lost history that was kept hidden away in a secret library within the old Masyaf fortress.
Most players may assume that Ezio’s tale abruptly ended there and that he lived out his days well. True, he did live out his days well but details of his story continue in Assasin’s Creed: Embers, an animated short film that concludes Ezio’s legendary tale. The following details summarize the master assassin’s final chapter.
4 Ezio Retired And Started A Family
After the events of Assasin’s Creed: Revelations, Ezio sets aside his assassin robes and marries Sofia Sartor, retiring to a countryside villa in Tuscany. There, Ezio and Sofia had two children: Marcello and Flavia. It is shown that Ezio spent his days in ideal bliss being a family man, writing in his study, and tending to his vineyards.
Ezio was particularly close with his daughter, Flavia as the two are shown to share a cheeky relationship in the film. Ezio also tried to put his past behind him for the sake of his children but fate had other plans.
3 Ezio Played Apart In Restoring The Chinese Assasin Order
One day Ezio saw a robed figure interacting with Flavia. Fearing the worst, Ezio accosted the stranger and demanded to know who they were. The stranger revealed an assassin’s insignia and introduced herself as Shao Jun, a member of the Chinese Assasin’s Brotherhood who had come to Ezio seeking help and guidance to restore her order.
Though initially reluctant, Ezio decided to help Shao Jun and get to know her better. Traveling to Florence, the two were attacked by an assailant which Shao Jun dispatched. More armed adversaries appeared and the two fled back to Ezio’s villa.
During the journey, Shao Jun revealed her troubled past, recalling her master’s death and that the current emperor had sent imperial soldiers to apprehend her for opposing his rule. Having a change of heart, Ezio recounted how he had revived the Assasin Orders in both Rome and Constantinople upon their return to his villa.
2 Ezio Survived An Assault On His Home
Realizing that his family would not be safe, Ezio sent them away and prepared his villa for an assault. His instincts proved to be right, as the imperial soldiers showed up and proceeded to take them by force. Whilst Shao Jun dealt with intruders on the upper floors, Ezio defended the lower floor and was able to defeat at least 3 soldiers.
The fighting reached its apex when an armed soldier wielding a portable canon confronted the 2 assassins. As the fight moved onto the surrounding fields, Shao Jun and Ezio were eventually able to overcome and put down the canon soldier. The following day, Shao Jun departed the villa and thanked Ezio for all his help. In return, Ezio gifted Shao Jun with a small box that contained the Precursor Box, an Isu technological device, and a piece of Eden. Ezio stated that she should only open it if she had lost her way.
1 Ezio Passed Away ‘Peacefully’ On A Bench
After quite some time, Ezio was shown to be writing and compiling notes in his study. When his wife, Sofia told him that she was going to Florence with Flavia, Ezio decided to accompany them. Tired and weary from all the shopping, Ezio sat down at a nearby bench whilst his family continued shopping. It is here, that Ezio is joined by a bad-tempered youth who makes conversation with Ezio complaining about the women in Florence.
It is unsure who the identity of this youth is. However, what does become apparent is that the interaction shifts into an ambiguous conversation where both youth and Ezio come to ‘recognize ‘one another. Due to the strange and subtleness of the exchange, some fans are eager to point out that the youth is a Templar agent sent to end Ezio in an unsuspecting manner. Fans cite the subtle reactions made by Ezio and the scar visible on the youth’s face as possible proof to suggest this.
Theories aside, what is clear is that Ezio, aged 65, dies on the bench, his last moments are of seeing his wife and daughter as they turn to face him. In his study, Ezio left a letter addressed to Sofia musing over his understandings and realizations from life. He also expressed the deep love and affection he had for her and their children, implying that he knew his demise was near and that should the time come earlier, he had said all that he needed to say. Requiescat in pace, Ezio.
