Netflix original mystery-horror series Archive 81 is the streaming platforms latest big hit and because of that, the showrunner is hoping that it’s not just a one-season trend. So far, Netflix has not okayed a renewal of the series, but Rebecca Sonnenshine is hoping the show is indeed going to get a season 2.
Archive 81 is a Netflix original series that focuses on archivist Dan Turner, who takes a job restoring a collection of fire-damaged videotapes from years earlier. As Turner reconstructs the work of a documentary filmmaker named Melody Pendras, he gets drawn into the investigation she was carrying out at an apartment building that might have housed a demonic cult. The more he unravels the mystery, the more things seem to be quite strange in the area where he’s working. While season 1 has been concluded, Sonnenshine wants to continue the story of Dan Turner.
Speaking in an interview with The Wrap, the Archive 81 showrunner said that if the show does get a second season, it wouldn’t be an anthology. Instead, the next installment would focus on the continuing adventures of the archivist. It would also apparently continue the story of Melody. Sonnenshine went on to say that she’s long had ideas for season 2, as it was never intended to only appear on Netflix for one season.
She added that she feels as though there are more stories to tell and that Archive 81 season 1 ended on a good cliffhanger that she can very easily pick up and run with for another installment. Furthermore, there are plenty of characters that were introduced around Dan and Melody that Sonnenshine wants to continue examining. “We introduce a lot of characters that surround Dan and Melody that have very rich and interesting lives to explore further. So yeah, we hope to keep going,” she said.
The showrunner went on to say that at the moment, she and her writers are preparing as if the popularity and quality of Archive 81 will get it another season from Netflix. She added that everyone involved in the project has meshed well and that the writers love the actors and want to continue giving them more to work with.
It’s unclear just when or if Netflix will announce that it’s going to renew Archive 81. The streaming service is notoriously mysterious about how it decides to continue one series while canceling another. The platform also rarely releases viewership numbers or how well a show is doing from one period of time to another, making it that much harder to understand what the future might hold.
Archive 81 is available now Netflix.
