From characters that like offices and science, to ones that love learning and reading, there are plenty of villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that could be considered nerdy. Some villagers fit the bill better than others if players plan to make a nerdy-themed island.

Most of the villagers for this island theme have the education hobby, which means the characters can be found with glasses on, reading books, and examining objects with a magnifying glass. Many of these villagers have glasses by default. These are not the only things that matter though. Other traits, such as a character’s full appearance, how nerdy their houses are, and their personalities and hobbies should be considered.

11 Deena

Deena is a green duck and one of the few nerdy characters that don’t wear glasses by default, but do have the education hobby. She is a school nerd with a passion for music, as can be seen by the musical instruments in her house. These items include a grand piano, a marimba, a cello, a chalkboard with music notes on it, a music stand, and two student chairs.

The Japanese variant of her name is a type of algae that could be based on her love of learning or her color. Deena is the type of nerd that would be in marching band and gush about getting a solo in an orchestra performance.

10 Cleo

Cleo is a snooty horse villager and an office nerd. Despite not having glasses by default, her education hobby means she can wander the island with rimmed glasses reading or examining objects. Her house is somewhat similar to Raymond’s. Her room is filled with items such as a wooden bookshelf, cassette player, office desk and chair, laptop, document stack, computer, and an office wall.

Cleo’s Japanese and Korean names sound similar to the English word Isotope, both referencing science and a famous Australian racehorse. She is a villager that would be the CEO of an office firm and inspire employees to work as hard as her.

9 Derwin

Derwin is a blue duck and one of the few nerdy villagers that have a different hobby, play. He is a nerd because of his looks and personality, having thick glasses and freckles. His name is likely a reference to the well-known scientist Charles Darwin.

Derwin’s house is a playground, which adds a stereotype of him being young. He is the type of villager that would be a tutor and offer to help people with their homework. In his free time, he’d go outside and pretend to be his favorite character from comics.

8 Hippeux

Hippeux the yellow hippo acts polite, has buck teeth, and loves music. He wears an emblem blazer that makes him look like a private school student. His house includes items such as a grand piano, a metronome, a pendulum clock, an antique mini table, and a phonograph.

By default, his house plays K.K. Sonata, giving it a sophisticated prep school feeling. Hippeux is a villager that would always try to look poised and well-spoken in front of others. People could walk in on him playing piano alone with a cup of tea nearby.

7 Cobb

Cobb is a science nerd and the only jock villager with the education hobby. He is a green pig with a bandage on the back of his head, both of which may parallel Frankenstein’s monster, especially given his jock background implying the monster’s strength. His house includes items like wooden bookshelves, a document stack, a homework set, a whiteboard, scattered papers, a stack of books, and book wallpaper.

In previous games, Cobb had a scientific theme, a possible reason that his Japanese name is likely from the word “professor” and “doctor” and why he seemed like a mad scientist. In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, he comes off as a book nerd and the type of villager to be so lost in thought that he misses what people are saying, or to get caught up in a book and forget to sleep.

6 Velma

Velma is a pink sheep with dark freckles and cat-eye glasses. She loves education, books, and music. Her house is very scholarly, with items like a fancy violin, a grand piano, a metronome, antique furniture, a phonograph, and classic-library wallpaper.

Her name may reference Velma from Scooby-Doo, who is both smart and shares the character’s hair color, freckles, and glasses. She is a character who would compose her own music and play it for guests, or get excited about showing her old records to people.

5 Raymond

Raymond is a grey cat with the nature hobby. Despite this, he is an office nerd whose name means “advice” and “council giver”. He wears glasses and business clothes such as a waistcoat. His house mimics this theme, including items like an office desk and chair, a document stack, a desktop computer, Newton’s cradle, a fax machine, and a whiteboard. He uses the office wallpaper.

Raymond has heterochromia, an uncommon scientific trait where eyes are two different colors. He is the type of villager to need all of his items precisely in line and would be a workaholic. He would work in finance and be the office jerk that everyone loves for no reason.

4 Doc

Doc is a blue bunny with glasses and the only lazy villager with the education hobby. His appearance and home give off the impression that he would be a teacher. His house has objects like wooden bookshelves, a study poster, a whiteboard, a lab-experiments set, a doctor’s coat, and a classic-library wall.

The music in his house is Pondering, another indicator of his love for learning and thinking. Doc is like a sweet and klutzy professor who can teach a lot about science but needs help with his computer. He would be a beloved and good teacher, but wouldn’t be able to figure out modern technology well and might often break it.

3 Graham

Graham is a yellow hamster with round glasses and buck teeth. He is a technology wizard, an office nerd, and very smart. Along with his appearance, his house gives off the vibe of a computer science major. Its items include a breaker server, a bookshelf, a stack of books, a laptop, and a desktop computer, along with server-room wallpaper.

His name might be a reference to Alexander Graham Bell, a famous scientist. Graham is the villager that would know a bit about every subject. He would be the middle-aged man working in an office that seems odd, but is smart and sweet once a person gets to know him.

2 Leopold

Leopold is a lion and a teaching nerd. He wears a noble shirt and glasses and has the education hobby. His house includes a skeleton, a study poster, lecture hall furniture, a homework set, a formal paper, a teacher’s desk, and book stacks.

His name is the Latin word for “lion” and his Japanese name translates to “teacher”. He is a villager that would earn a degree to be a college professor and adore his job and students. He would offer extra credit assignments for people who work hard and put in effort.

1 Petri

Petri is the perfect science nerd. She is a white mouse with large round glasses, a doctor’s coat, and a black tie. This appearance references lab rats. Her house looks like a hospital laboratory and includes objects like a desk, a hospital bed, a microscope, a hospital screen, a medicine chest, and a science pod. Her laboratory wall ties it all together.

Her English name is probably a reference to a Petri dish used for bacteria, her Japanese name comes from the word “science”, and her German name refers to a scientific tool, the pipette. Her house has Pondering playing. Petri is a cute lab rat, and people would let her do experiments on them, so they could see her happy about her research.
