Out of all of the surprises and big cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home, perhaps the one that has fans talking most (while also hoping for him to star in another solo outing) is Andrew Garfield’s return as the web slinger. With this, Garfield had to lie to many people about his involvement in the film, including former The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone.
Stone played Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker’s love interest, in both Amazing Spider-Man films. While those films received mixed to mostly positive reviews, a big standout was the chemistry between Garfield and Stone.
Now speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield shared the things he did (which meant lying to people like Stone) in order to keep the surprise Spider-Man: No Way Home cameos a secret until the film was released. “Emma kept on texting me and she was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me.’ And like, I honestly… I kept it going, even with her, it’s hilarious,” Garfield said, now finally free to open up more about his long-kept secret. “And then she saw it and she was like, ‘You’re a jerk!’,” he added.
With No Way Home dealing with the multiverse, Garfield was able to reprise his Spider-Man role following a divisive The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and join Tom Holland and Tobey Maguire’s versions of the characters. Following the film’s release this past December, Garfield’s performance was immediately praised by critics and fans. In fact, many are now pushing for him to finally get his third solo outing.
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 is very possible, considering the growing number of characters crossing over in the Sony/MCU Spider-Man universe as well as producer Amy Pascal’s planned Spider-Man films, so it’s very likely audiences can see Garfield donning the suit again on the big screen at some point. But so far, Garfield has shared that he is still waiting on the call to return.
For now, though, fans can experience Garfield in action in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Other than the return of the Spider-Men, the film also stars Alfred Molina as Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe as Green Goblin, who both reprised their roles from Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. No Way Home opened to rave reviews, as it currently has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and has now passed other blockbusters like Titanic to become one of the highest grossing domestic films of all time. The film also stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Jamie Foxx as Electro, Thomas Haden Church as Sandman, and Rhys Ifans as Lizard.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is now playing in theaters.
